Born of the gold rush, this mining town had over 20,000 prospectors in the mid 1850s. Since the reopening of gold mines in the town in 1984, the town has become the leading gold producer in Victoria.

Stawell has a strong commercial focus, being the gateway to the popular holiday destinations, a service centre for grazing and cropping agriculture and it also has a number of industries including gold mining and the numerous associated industries, tyre retreading, the Aunde textiles Mill, and brick making.

Stawell hosts a large number of annual and regular community events that make it a vibrant community to live in. Every Easter the city stages the world's richest professional footrace, the famous Stawell Gift, - a traditional event that attracts thousands to the town and is seen by millions coast to coast on television. After more than a century, the event’s popularity still grows.

As well as the Stawell Gift,  the town is proud to host the Easter Athletics Carnival, the Grampians Pro Am Golf Circuit occurs in March and the Stawell Spring tournament is run in September. There is also the Grampians Jazz festival in May and the Agricultural Show in October.

Other enjoyable local activities include the Grampians, which are an extraordinarily rugged mountain outcrop at the western edge of the Great Dividing Range. The 167,000-hectare Grampians National Park is one of the State's most popular holiday destinations and is home for almost a third of Victoria's plant species.

The average maximum temperature for January (summer) is a pleasant 26 oc. The average maximum temperature for July (winter) is a mild 12 oc. The town receives an average of approximately 534 mm of rain per annum.
