Jeparit is a small town located by the Wimmera River, 370km north-west of Melbourne and 35km north of Dimboola. It has a population of around 500 people and its claim to fame is that it is the birthplace of Sir Robert Menzies, prime minister of Australia from 1939-1941 and 1949-1966.

The town offers adequate services to the area, which is involved in the production of wool and growing of wheat, barley and oats.

Lake Hindmarsh, the largest freshwater lake in Victoria, is a major attraction of the area with its abundance of wildlife and Australian fauna. The lake also provides residents or tourists alike to swim, fish, boat and water ski. The town's Beach Carnival is held at Lake Hindmarsh in January each year.

Another attraction of the area is the Wimmera-Mallee Pioneer Museum which provides conducted tours around its varied buildings relating to the colonial era on its four hectare site.
